GOLDSWORTHY LOWES DICKINSON, British scholar and professor, was born (d: 1932 ); Dickinson, known as “Goldie” to his friends and admirers, was a professor of the classics at Cambridge, where he was the hub of the so-called Cambridge Apostles, which in his time included A.M. Forster, Bertrand Russell, Alfred North Whitehead, Lytton Strachey, and Leonard Woolf.

Goldie’s impact on all is recorded in Forster’s biography of his great teacher. Dickinson was a political writer as well as a classicist. His views were instrumental in the founding of the League of Nations, even though his own popularity declined because of his pacifism during WWI.

He was revered for his wit, which even managed to creep into such somber words as the Dictionary of National Biography. Dickinson’s write-up of the notorious educator Oscar Browning, who had been forced to leave both Eton and Cambridge for his “familiarity with young men,” includes the wonderfully ambiguous line: “He assisted young Italians, as he had done young Englishmen,towards the openings they desired.” Goldie himself cared less about openings than he did about heels and soles since he was a boot-fetishist whose tastes were only too gladly satisfied by his Cambridge students. As he wrote of one young man in his journal, “I liked him to stand upon me when we met.”

GUTHRIE McCLINTIC, American actor, born (d: 1961); For over forty years he and his wife, Katharine Cornell were the envy of Broadway. Against all odds, considering their profession, theirs was a happy marriage, a successful business partnership, a close friendship.

What they shared most deeply was their bisexuality, exercised to suit their needs, maturely and honestly. In many ways, the American Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson.

ANDY WARHOL, American artist (d. 1987) an American artist who became a central figure in the movement known as pop art. After a successful career as a commercial illustrator, Warhol became famous worldwide for his work as a painter; an avant-garde filmmaker, a record producer, an author and a public figure known for his presence in wildly diverse social circles that included bohemian street people, distinguished intellectuals, Hollywood celebrities and wealthy aristocrats.

Andy Warhol was one of the first major American artists to be open about his homosexuality. Many people think of Warhol as "asexual" and merely a "voyeur", but these notions have been debunked by biographers (such as Victor Bockris), explored by other members of the factory scene such as Bob Colacello (in his book Holy Terror: Andy Warhol Close Up), and by scholars like art historian Richard Meyer (in his book Outlaw Representation). The question of how his sexuality influenced Warhol's work and shaped his relationship to the art world is a major subject of scholarship on the artist,and is an issue that Warhol himself addressed in interviews, in conversation with his contemporaries, and in his publications (e.g. Popism: The Warhol Sixties).

Throughout his career, Warhol produced erotic photography and drawings of male nudes. Many of his most famous works (portraits of Liza Minnelli, Judy Garland, Elizabeth Taylor, and films like Blow Job, My Hustler  and Lonesome Cowboys) draw from gay underground culture and/or openly explore the complexity of sexuality and desire. Many of his films premiered in gay porn theaters. That said, some stories about Warhol's development as an artist revolve around the obstacle his sexuality initially presented as he tried to launch his career. The first works that he submitted to a gallery in the pursuit of a career as an artist were homoerotic drawings of male nudes. They were rejected for being too openly gay. 

In Popism, furthermore, the artist recalls a conversation with the film maker Emile de Antonio about the difficulty Warhol had being accepted socially by the then-more-famous (but closeted) gay artists Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg. De Antonio explained that Warhol was "too swish and that upsets them." In response to this, Warhol writes, "There was nothing I could say to that. It was all too true. So I decided I just wasn't going to care, because those were all the things that I didn't want to change anyway, that I didn't think I 'should' want to change ... Other people could change their attitudes but not me". 

In exploring Warhol's biography, many turn to this period - the late 1950s and early 1960s - as a key moment in the development of his persona. Some have suggested that his frequent refusal to comment on his work, to speak about himself (confining himself in interviews to responses like "Uh, No"and "Um, Yes", and often allowing others to speak for him), and even the evolution of his Pop style can be traced to the years when Warhol was first dismissed by the inner circles of the New York art world.

JIM MCGREEVEY, an American Democratic politician, was born; He served as the 52nd Governor of New Jersey from January 15, 2002, until November 15, 2004, when he left office three months after admitting that he had had an extramarital affair with a male employee. Upon publicly revealing his homosexuality on August 12, 2004, McGreevey became the first and, to date, only out gay state governor in United States history. 

McGreevey and his partner Mark O'Donnell regularly attended St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church in New York, in addition to a local parish in New Jersey. At St. Bartholomew's, McGreevey was received into the Episcopal Church on Sunday, April 29, 2007. He was accepted to General Theological Seminary, from which he received the degree of Master of Divinity, a requirement to becoming an Episcopal priest.

In 2009, McGreevey told the New York Times that he is a volunteer for Exodus Ministries, where he performs service to former prisoners seeking rehabilitation at the Church of Living Hope in Harlem, New York. In 2009 WCBS-TV reported McGreevey was continuing his training at All Saints Episcopal Church in Hoboken where Reverend Geoffrey Curtiss is the Pastor. Reports in April 2011 indicate that McGreevey's bid to be ordained was rejected. McGreevey's life after politics, his calling as a priest and his ministry to prison inmates is covered in a 2013 HBO documentary film, Fall to Grace, directed by Alexandra Pelosi, daughter of Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi.

JACK FERTIG, also known as SISTER BOOM BOOM XXX, died of liver cancer in San Francisco on this date. He was an original. In 1982, Sister Boom Boom ran for a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors with agitprop campaigning tactics bringing humor and raising issues she felt were being ignored in the race. She won 23,124 votes with her occupation listed as "Nun of the Above". Five supervisors were elected; she placed eighth. After she started campaigning for mayor in 1983 against incumbent Dianne Feinstein, San Francisco passed a law requiring candidates to use only their legal names on the ballot. This was commonly called the "Sister Boom Boom law".

Due to internal disputes, Fertig broke from the Sisters in 1985. He went on to pursue his Divine calling and became an award-winning astrologer and respected Queer Muslim activist. He was an avid organizer in the leather and sober communities. Cleve Jones, AIDS activist and creator of the NAMES Project AIDS Quilt,remembers Sister Boom Boom as a “dear friend” and a “fierce advocate for the poor and immigrant communities.” He also said, “I knew this person Sister Boom Boom and I knew Jack Fertig and it took me a year and a half to realize they were the same person!”

In 2009, a mysterious figure in a burqa, appeared at the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence 30th Anniversary Exhibition at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. The black silhouette revealed herself as “Sister Boom Boom XXX.” When asked about the name change in a 2010 interview, Sister explained, “Sister Boom Boom is my slave name. Now that I am Muslim, I’m Boom Boom XXX.” Since the 30th anniversary, Sister Boom Boom XXX had started to reconnect with the Sisters at socials and select public events. That same year, Sister Boom Boom XXX spoke at a “Sister Spirituality” panel for San Francisco’s Buddhist Fellowship. It would be her last public appearance.

Sister Boom Boom XXX, legendary change-maker and hot ginger, joined the Nuns of Above in 2012. We all honor the Queer power that manifested as Sister Boom Boom XXX and we will ensure our Sister’s legacy is not forgotten.
