CORREGGIO (ne Antonio Allegri) Italian painter, born (d: 1534); In the century and a half since apologists began compiling lists of famous practitioners to justify homosexuality, the name of Italian painter Correggio has always enjoyed a prominent place on most lists. Many of his paintings are noted for the almost unearthly beauty of their male nudes, and his hunky Jesuses and have certainly been admired by Gay men through the centuries, but the paintings themselves seem to be the only “evidence” that Correggio was himself homosexual. Nothing of what is known of his biography would seem to support explicitly what appears implicitly in his work.
