SUZANNE BeVIER, who was born on this date, (d: 4/12/2025) was a member of the legendary Gay Liberation Front (GLF) in New York. Her graphic designs for the Come Out! newspaper were so fine they inspired generations.
BeVier was, first and foremost, an artist who was always pursuing and developing her creative practice. She began working in resin and polyester sculpture, moved on to watercolor and mixed media, and was an early and successful adopter of digital painting. In her last years, she was primarily a photographer, capturing her love for animals and plants as well as setting up and photographing endearing yet politically charged fantasy scenarios.
She championed the rights of others especially in relation to class, gender and sexuality. In her young years in the good company of many early feminist, lesbian, and gay liberation artists, she was active in well-known campaigns of groups like Lavender Menace and Gay Liberation Front. She was a hard worker and an ingenious maker of many, many things including her own furniture. She built a successful painting and decorating business in NYC and was known for her innovation in special finishes.
She purchased land and build her own beautiful house and guest house compound in upstate NY, doing all the design, building, and plumbing herself. She lived there going on 50 years and entertained her friends and neighbors amongst the herbs and morning glories in her thriving deck garden.
She struggled with declining mobility for the last couple of years of her life, as well as other age-related issues. She passed peacefully at home, with a nice warm fire and her beloved cat, Lola, and good friend Judy, by her side.
